The Department of English Language and Literature aims to educate prospective graduates who can speak English fluently, express themselves effectively in writing, show good command of the literature and traditions of the English-speaking countries, and interpret the English language.Students of this 4-year programme can also take German classes up to the advanced level. If they pass the Placement and Proficiency Test, admitted students can be exempted from the English Preparatory Programme and proceed to the first year of their Department.

Department offers courses in the fields and periods of English literature, text analysis, criticism, American literature, and comparative literature. Critical Thinking, Linguistics and Translation Studies are other courses that are part of our curriculum. Globalization has brought with it the understanding and analysis of different cultures. Perceiving this necessity as raising awareness about “English” literature beyond the studies of “English” literature in our department, we ensure that our students take elective courses such as Postcolonial Literature and that they also study the literature of other English-speaking countries. In this context, students learn about current issues such as culture and independence in the context of imperialism, imperial history, and decolonization. We also offer our students the opportunity to learn a second foreign language.

The Ph.D. program for master's degree holders at the Department of English Language and Literature is designed to prepare students for independent work as scholars, critics of literature and as competent and objective academics in the advanced study of literatures in English. The normal duration of the program is 3 academic years consisting of 6 semesters. The program which is based on a master's degree in a relevant field requires the successful completion of 180 ECTS with 60 ECTS course work and 120 ECTS thesis work. One ECTS is equal to 25.5 hours of student workload per semester . The course plan must consist of at least 7 courses with 21 local credits (equivalent to 60 ECTS). The institute may require the prospective students to take additional courses upon the request of the program director if the educational background of the applicant is not seen appropriate to follow the normal program.

Language proficiency combined with a critical and analytical thinking mind are golden keys to a variety of careers for the postgraduates of the English Department. Among these careers: foreign language teaching at schools and higher Institutions of Education, translation careers in a variety of sites such as notary offices, media centers, public offices, embassies and consulates; writing and editing careers in publishing houses, journals, magazines and the list is way longer than this.

The program also offers a wide variety of elective courses to students and aims to teach the basics of teaching English as a foreign language, both theoretically and practically.
