Civil engineering deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and natural built environment, including buildings, roads, bridges, dams, and canals. It is a wide ranging profession, including different sub-disciplines, structural engineering, materials science, geotechnical engineering, water resources, surveying, and transportation engineering.

The undergraduate program educates and prepares students for careers in fields as diverse as engineering design, application and management. Graduates have opportunity to work in local and international diverse companies and firms, to initiate their own business, to hold leadership positions in government or private organizations.

The civil engineering program is designed to be flexible: while we adhere to a strict curriculum of the basics of civil engineering, on the other hand we allow students to specialize in accordance with their interests. In the next years, the most promising branches of civil engineering will likely be structure and transportation. In response to this, the program has many elective courses which allow students to specialize in either structural or transport engineering.

Civil engineering as an occupation has a very special position in Türkiye. Nationally, civil engineering departments enrolled the best students from the 1950s to the middle of the 1970s. These graduates became the employees of many Turkish civil engineering firms. As a result, Turkish civil construction companies were able to sign a large number of contracts, subsequently performing successfully in projects in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. These large construction companies required Turkish engineers, who were well educated and could speak a foreign language (usually English), to be hired in their international projects and construction sites.
