The mission of the Department of Economics is to introduce students to and provide them with an understanding of today`s modern economy as it exists both in Turkey and in the greater world giving space for discussions of contemporary theories in economics, doing interdisciplinary research that pushes the boundaries of economics supported by a philosophy which emphasizes the interactions of both social and natural sciences, and sharing our academic findings with the greater community.

When you study economics you gain a toolkit of skills, approaches and ways of thinking that you can apply to a wide range of problems. Economics is one of the central disciplines underpinning the study of business and management and public policy. The Economics PhD is designed to train you to conduct research of high academic merit and to make important and original contributions to the subject. The Department of Economics enjoys an international reputation for research of the highest quality. Ultimately all doctoral researchers will have the ability to identify and pursue cutting edge research questions, characterise and solve economic problems using advanced mathematical tools, and test hypotheses using highly sophisticated statistical techniques. They should be able to derive policy implications from their research and communicate these to policy makers in a manner which is comprehensible. They will also be able to peer review others’ research and offer constructive criticism, and to extend the frontiers of the discipline through their own innovative research.
