The department of Mathematics offers graduate courses leading to Ph.D. degree in Mathematics. The department emphasizes both pure and applied mathematics. Research in the department covers algebra, algebraic geometry, number theory, functional analysis, differential geometry, differential equations, combinatorics, topology, biomathematics, statistics, probability, stochastic analysis and mathematical physics.

Innovation in product design and manufacturing has become a major driver for industrial competitiveness and profitability in recent years. As enabling technologies become more easily accessible, engineers are faced with increasing demands for designing and producing more complex mechanical devices to serve the needs of the society. Next generation engineering products will be ‘smart’ with many functionalities; they will be made of new materials; they will increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact; they will vary in size from nano to mega scales; and they will be more closely integrated with information processing systems. Also as mechanical systems are becoming increasingly complex to analyse and expensive to experiment, more emphasis will have to be placed on computer aided analysis, design, verification and manufacturing. Our research program in mechanical engineering responds to these trends and focuses on basic research related to materials science and process engineering, product design, and information integrated manufacturing processes. In doing so applications to different physical processes are studied (e.g. energy systems, bioengineering, metal forming, polymer processing, discrete part manufacturing to name a few).

Medical Microbiology primarily deals with microorganisms which cause diseases in humans. The major working fields are the structures of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, growth properties of microorganisms, pathogenic strategies they enhanced, diagnostic approaches to infectious diseases and efficiency of antimicrobial agents used for therapy. For that purpose, morphological studies based on light microscope, fluorescent microscope, and electron microscope, various cultivation methods and molecular techniques are performed. The Medical Microbiology PhD Program at Koc University offers a comprehensive training to the graduates who are planning to work in the field of medical microbiology or continue to doctoral programs in the same area.

Gap in the literature in neuromuscular physiology: Since it is difficult to study the functions of the neuromuscular system in human subjects, most of our knowledge comes from studies on experimental animals. However, since the animals are usually anaesthetized or decerebrated in these experiments, and since such reduction processes are known to alter the synaptic interactions, it is not possible to directly apply these findings to human subjects. Therefore, details of the synaptic interactions between sensory or cortical afferents and motoneurons, the process of feed-back from the peripheral receptors to the motoneurons, the pathways used in these processes, and conditions where such synaptic interactions are modulated are still unknown in human subjects. Because of the fact that we do not yet understand the functions of the neuromuscular system in human subjects, we cannot develop knowledge based methods for diagnosing and treating neuromuscular dysfunctions. The main aim of this project therefore is to investigate some of the functions of the human neuromuscular system.
