Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) is the surgical specialty concerned with the surgical management of pathologies of the mouth, jaws and face. It is a unique specialty, requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry, followed by a comprehensive general and specialist surgical training programme; and is one of ten internationally recognized surgical specialties, which within Europe is defined under the medical directives. The programme reflects the surgical specialty in that its focus is on management of head and neck malignancy, advanced head and neck reconstruction, paediatric deformity (cleft and craniofacial), adult deformity (craniofacial, orthognathic and aesthetic), oral surgery, TMJ and the management of facial trauma.

The advanced graduate education program in oral and maxillofacial surgery is a six-year residency program leading to qualification for certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, completion of the MD degree at Harvard Medical School, and a total of 16 months as a Mass General resident in general surgery. The program is housed at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The degree is designed for the general dentist who has already taken the first step towards the field of implantology. You have already placed implants and now want to develop your practical skills and build up solid, scientific knowledge in order to provide safe, appropriate and efficient treatments. The graduates will be able to independently plan and implement therapy concepts for the treatment of patients requiring dental implant prosthetics. In addition, graduates will also have the skills required to select, analyse and fully integrate into their own practice a full range of treatments and knowledge in this field of dental implantology.

The Orthodontics course provides academic, practical and clinical teaching in contemporary orthodontics including normal development and growth of the craniofacial region, development of the dentition, interceptive treatment, orthodontic tooth movement, treatment planning, management of malocclusion, the use of contemporary appliance systems and treatment mechanics. The course is delivered through lectures, practical and technical teaching elements, clinical seminars, tutorials, self-directed learning, supervised clinical treatment of patients and attendance on diagnostic and multidisciplinary outpatient clinics.

The programme is broadly divided between academic modules, the treatment of patients under close supervision and a research project.
